In this blog entry, the professional Charleston garage door repair and Charleston garage door maintenance team here at A1 Garage Door Charleston will detail some great tips for keeping your garages cool during this hot Charleston Summer.
Open Garage Doors
The best way to cool the garage is by opening the garage door, ideally if a breeze flows into the garage. If you have windows in your garage, open them to create a cross breeze. The increased airflow makes it easier for hot air to escape if your garage door and garage windows are open, stay around it. If you’re working in your garage with the door open, close it when you go back into your home.
Garage Decluttering
Clutter in garages like boxes can actually retain heat, prevent airflow, and increase the temperature. The more items you have, the hotter it will be. Declutter your garage and decide what items in it you really need – or what items can be moved to a basement, attic, storage facility, or elsewhere. Then add storage areas for the items you want to keep like shelving units or overhead storage. This will keep the floor clean and make it easier for airflow to cool down your garage.
Ceiling Fans
We recommend installing a ceiling fan in your garage. Opt for an industrial strength ceiling fan, one that is 8 feet in height, as the ceiling fan will work best when it is 7-9 feet off the ground. If you can’t install a garage ceiling fan, consider a portable air conditioner or an oscillating fan. If you have windows, you can install a window fan. And if the heat is likely due to humidity, consider installing a dehumidifier that can better control the interior climate.
Insulation Improvements
Make sure that you have properly installed insulation in your garage to prevent heat build up and keep cool air from escaping. Exterior wall insulation is the most important. If you have complete exterior walls with drywall, use blow insulation to fill gaps. You can also consider replacing your garage door with an insulated garage door. If you have windows or doors in your garage, use weather stripping and/or caulk to seal air gaps.
